Summary

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing meaningful instruction designed to promote social, physical and intellectual student growth, and creating and maintaining an environment conducive to learning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter appropriate to grade level / course assignment as well as laws and principles related to serving students with special education needs.
  2. Provide meaningful instruction to students which will enhance student learning.
  3. Take all necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  4. Utilize appropriate supplementary materials in lesson planning and presentation to enhance learning.
  5. Communicate in a manner that is effective and appropriate to the age and/or ability level of students.
  6. Incorporate appropriate assessment to provide feedback on a student’s mastery of material and attainment of specific instructional requirements. 
  7. Assist the Administration in implementing the Riverview Code of Conduct at the building and classroom level to provide a safe school and classroom environment conducive to learning.
  8. Create lesson plans and activities to implement and supplement district approved curriculum. 
  9. Participate in building, grade level and subject area committees.
  10. Participate in professional development activities.
  11. Maintain and submit accurate records including student attendance, grades and discipline as well as others required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
  12. Complete and submit forms and required reports in a timely manner.
  13. Communicate regularly with parents regarding progress and other educational concerns.
  14. Participate as a member of an IEP team and other student assistance teams as requested.
  15. Implement special educational plans, individual educational programs and individual health plans.
  16. Serve as a resource to others in the area of IEP’s, modifications for students and understanding various disabilities.
  17. Take steps to counteract prejudices based on race, religion, gender, age, disabilities or personal attributes in order to foster a learning community, which respects all participants.
  18. Report suspected abuse, neglect, discrimination and harassments as directed by Board policy
  19. Prepare lesson plans for use by a substitute teacher.
  20. Provide and accept constructive criticism for improvement of teaching and learning. 
  21. Maintain a cooperative working relationship with parents and co-workers to support the mission of the school district.
  22. Maintain professional relationships with students in order to effectively support them as learners.
  23. Responds to administrative requests in a timely manner.
  24. Consult with parents to obtain and disseminate pre-evaluation forms required; i.e. Evaluation Plan, Procedural Safeguards, Permission to Test, Parental Input Form.  
  25. Schedule, lead, communicate, prepare and complete required paperwork for IEP conferences in a timely manner according to state and district policies and regulations.
  26. Use district selected IEP software to complete paperwork according to district policies.
  27. Distribute modifications to general education teachers in a timely manner.
  28. Comply with all Riverview School Board of Education policies.
  29. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal and or director of special services.
